First of all, have you thought about adding vintage furniture? Before you start to worry yourself about how much it will cost, try looking online. You’ll be surprised at what you can find on eBay or even through local selling groups in your area. If you’re feeling super creative, you could buy something and repaint it yourself. This way, you can match it to any colour scheme you want. Car boot sales are also home to many vintage furniture gems.

Next stop- think about the lighting. Why not add a chandelier light fitting to your kitchen or living room? Sophisticated, and replica of old school glamour, it’s sure to add something unique to your living space. If chandeliers aren’t quite what you had in mind, why not consider lamp shades in funky prints and patterns, or those which have an unusual structure. Either way, they’re sure to be a focal point of attention when guests come round.

One of the most popular ways to add character to a home, is to add woodwork. It’s normally one of the main features in a character property. This is because of the way in which is adds texture and interest to your home. You could try inserting wooden doors from old buildings such as a barn or farmhouse, or you could add wooden shutters to your windows. In terms of making a room more homely, remember that wood panelling can make any space look instantly more cosy and attractive.

If you’re a bookworm, then you could literally create a wall of books, which will give a room the feeling of it being a library. It will make the space feel more homely, as well as it feeling lived in and full of history. If you’re not into books, then you could do the same thing with DVD’s or even CD’s. Either way, your house will feel more personal to you.
