A kitchen pantry is not something that every kitchen has, but rather something that every kitchen should have. It’s an ideal way to give yourself some more storage, and what’s great about it, is that it’s behind a closed door, meaning it doesn’t leave your kitchen looking cluttered. However, it’s not just a case of building one and having done with it. You need to plan properly so that it’s a good use of space rather than a waste, which can easily happen. Here’s our tips:
The position of the door
You’d be surprised at how many people get this wrong. You need to make sure that the door opens the right way, into the kitchen. Otherwise, you’ll find that the door keeps banging into the shelves making it impossible to store anything! It might even be worth considering the installation of a sliding door.
Floor to ceiling shelving
You’re using it for storage after all! Make the most of a small space by putting in shelves from the floor to the ceiling. If you do this, try to remember to make different shelves different sizes; your items aren’t all going to be one size and you’ll want to make room for those which are taller than others.
Another obvious point, but one which can be quite easily forgotten. If it’s not walk in, then you probably won’t need a separate light fixture inside, but if it’s walk in then you probably will. Make sure that it’s bright enough to see into all the nooks and crannies.
Do you really need it to be walk into it
If you live on your own, for example, then there’s no point in having a massive pantry- you’re just going to end up storing things for the sake of it. On the other hand, you might find that it’s not feasible to make space for a large pantry. Remember that you don’t necessarily need to be able to walk into it. We bet you have loads of cupboards in your house that you can’t walk into that are functioning perfectly fine!
Make it easy to organise
Have a think about this; the last thing you want is to be scrambling around for ages trying to find the item that you want. You want to store things, yes, but you also want to be able to find them again. If you know, for example, that you’re going to be storing a lot of wine in the pantry, you might want to install a wine rack into the shelves.
