Door handles are probably not your number one priority when you’re decorating your home, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need some thinking about. There are lots of different types of them, and if you’re not clued up, then things could get a bit confusing! Well don’t worry- we’ve created a bit of a guide to make things a bit more simple.
Do you want a door handle or a door knob?
This all depends on you. Both have completely different looks. Of course, a door handle is likely to be more practical, but a door knob might come in more variations. Remember that a door handle means you’ll have to do a push down action while a door knob works with a turning action. If you’re replacing a door handle/knob which is already there, then it might be the case that you have to stick with that.
Do you want the door to lock or latch?
If you already have a lock or latch, then it’s probably going to be easier to stick with what you’ve got. However, if you door only currently latches but you want it to lock, then be aware that it could be a complicated process. There are lots of different types of security locks including a euro lock, a multi point lock and even an espagnolette lock. We’d suggest that you do your research before settling. It’ll make choosing the handle itself a lot easier!
What about the backset?
You need to remember that door knobs need a deeper backset than a door handle. Therefore, if you already had door handles but you want to replace than with knobs, then it might be a problem as the backset will not be deep enough. In the same way, if you’re swapping from a knob to a handle, then the backset will be too deep. Of course, the backset can sometimes be altered, but you will need to consult a professional.
What sort of material and finish?
This all depends on what type of house you have. For example, if you have a period property, then you’ll probably want a door handle which will also look like a period feature to inkeep with your home’s theme.
